The Morkie also referred to as Yorktese or Malkie, is created by the crossing of two breeds: Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese. The Yorktese is exceedingly popular. The ideal Morkie is well-proportioned, sturdy, and hardy in appearance. They possess a lively and sweet expression. Morkies make excellent companions. They tend to get along quite well with children and other animals. Although variations can exist from dog to dog (as with any other dog), the Morkie combines the good health of the Maltese with the ease of use and colorings of the Yorkie.
Morkies are well suited for apartment living provided they are sufficiently exercised and mentally stimulated. They are relatively active indoors and should have a variety of safe toys to keep them occupied. Morkies enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions, and off-lead play in a fenced yard.
The Morkie\Yorktese is not recommended for homes with small children under age of 5. They are affectionate, loyal, devoted, and loving. They do well with other pets they have been raised with. They bond closely to their family and do not do well if ignored or left alone for extended periods of time. Boredom and loneliness will lead to destructive behavior and incessant barking (as with any breed). The Yorktese is suspicious of strangers and will alert their family to strangers and out of the ordinary sounds and therefore make good watch dogs. |
